we’re sure that, like us, you will have wondered once or twice (a day) what art really is and what it’s all about. we offer no answers (although we can offer some interesting musings if you’re in the mood to be distracted). we do, however, think that ms. fiona campbell and her real art roadshow crew are onto something truly awesome.
allow us to elaborate.
the real art roadshow is all about bringing art to our young people, no matter where they go to school or how much money they’ve got. and when we say bringing it to them, that is exactly what we mean: the real art roadshow consists of two huge and very snazzy trucks (one black, one silver – pure class) each of which unfolds to form a 64 square metre art gallery displaying over 60 original artworks by some of new zealand’s leading artists.
sounds more interesting than reading about art in textbooks, right? of course it does! which is exactly the idea behind the real art roadshow: to get kids all over new zealand out of the classroom and face-to-face with art. and the greatest thing? it’s free!
what we love the most about this whole not-for-profit outrageously-fantastic outfit is the fact that it is about making art accessible to everyone. because art’s there to be admired and enjoyed and talked about and looked at, right? even if we don’t know what it means exactly, we all – each and every one of us – have the right and the ability to wonder about it.
we’re so taken with the whole thing that we’re seriously considering donning school uniforms and masquerading as thirteen-year-olds the next time the trucks turn up in town. the masquerading bit wouldn’t be so hard but we’re worried that fiona might recognise our faces …
p.s. fiona is also the author of ruby’s diary, the heartwarming tale of life from a chicken’s point of view (bet you haven’t read a book like that before!).
p.p.s you can also visit the real art roadshow website to see the art that it shows, PICTURES OF THE TRUCKS (the best!), find out where in the country it is, and the answers to other questions you may be posing yourself (but it won’t tell you what to make for dinner. for that you should go here.)
