wow. everything about the last couple of weeks has been big. In Christchurch there were big shakes (many of them) and big shocks, we saw big buildings crumble and big cracks open in the streets. big and little people throughout the country shed big tears, and many souls felt their lives shift to face big uncertainty. yes, there were some totally admirable bigs too: bravery, perseverance, and the refusal to let disaster get the better of you. the people of Christchurch, you are all amazing and strong souls.
but, we think the bigs can take backseat now. there is only so much big our nerves and our hearts can take. all those of you in Christchurch already know that moving onwards and upwards is going to be a gradual process: it’s something that we all have to work together to achieve, one step at a time.
so let’s focus on the little things. to pinch the wise words of that wise woman, mother teresa, we must ‘be faithful in small things because it is in them that your strength lies’.
we’ve all already donated. (and for those of you who haven’t yet but would like to, it’s easy. just visit the red cross website.)
but those of us who — like us here at jumping tangents — aren’t in Christchurch feel a long way away. we want to know what the little things are that we can do to help.
which is what gave us the idea of sending love and kia kaha letters for Christchurch. because letters are our specialty here at JT, right? and if we’ve learnt anything from last week, it’s how important love and loved ones are.
so this is how it works:
send a letter to your loved one(s) to tell them you love them – we’ll handwrite your message, add quotes, put it in a special envelope, and send it – and, as well as our supreme letter-writing skills (we’re doing it for free), we’ll donate $5 from every letter to the Red Cross earthquake fund. the beauty is that, as well as donating, you’re also letting the people you care about know you love them.
for, as that knowledgable mother teresa said (she knew all about the little things):
‘let us not be satisfied with just giving money. money is not enough, money can be got, but they need your hearts to love them. so, spread your love everywhere you go.’
Christchurch, know we love you and we want to help you with the little things. all those who are dear to us (that’s you!), know we love you and we want to help you with the little things. please help us share this love by sending your own little token of it to someone dear to you.
please spread the word — let your friends know that they can send you and their other loved ones love letters and donate to Christchurch at the same time too. we’ve worked it out and if everyone on our newsletter mailing list sent a love letter to someone anywhere, we would raise almost $10,000. which is how little things turn into big things.
also, you can read about other little things that special people are doing in this week’s newsletter.
